The following conventions were developed by me over a period of five years. It is quite possible that the following principles were not always kept. If you discover any deviations or errors, please notify me.
The photographs are stored under color coded museum files so that an individual country or region may be recognized by color.

4 | K | A comment is finally written |
Every data name begins with an abbreviation followed by a simple dash, i.e. "AM-" (for Amsterdam).
I have assigned a city abbreviation for every museum (containing one to three letters)
I have photographed feather work from direct objects as well as from books, so I have also devised a special abbreviation for the photos that were taken from books. All data names begin with „ZZ“ when the photograph is from a book.
All pieces from private collections are preceded by a „ZY“.
In reference to the assignment of the contractions "ZZ" and "ZY"; first the pictures of the museum collections will appear. Pictures from books or private collections will appear afterwards, towards the end.
In the following list all museums that have been visited at least once are marked with „ja“ (=„yes“).

In the filenames there are generally two types of data;
In each case, my comments on missing, doubtful or incorrect data are set in parentheses, in order to clearly separate these from the collection data.
The file names contain the following data; for example:
Pos. | Information | Description |
---|---|---|
Pos. | Information | Description |
Block 1 - Identification number "AM-401.014-1" | ||
1-1 | AM | Museum Abbreviation (Amsterdam in this example) |
1-2 | - | First dash; separation between museum abbreviation and the museum number[1] |
1-3 | 401.014 | Museum number of the featured piece (the number assigned by the museum in the same form that the museum assigned it) |
1-4 | - | Second dash-separates the museum number and the current numbers of the same piece |
1-5 | 1 | Current number of the photographs of the same piece. (In this example the first photograph of the piece with museum-number 401.014; also when only one photo was made, the ‘1’ will always be assigned. |
1-6 | " " | blank[2] |
[1]From this system of the separation by hyphens I deviated in the following cases and the first hyphen is replaced by a blank:
[2]The blank after the identification number is obligatory. It makes it possible to separate these by means of programming languages from the following description text (e.g. for the processing for a data base). | ||
Block 2 - Collection data, description "Wayana,Kopf, apomali,MvK de Goje,1904" (The elements in this block are each separated by a comma) | ||
2-1 | Wayana | Name of ethnic group (Sometimes with exact map references) |
2-2 | Kopf | Body part on which the piece was worn (head, arm hip…) |
2-3 | apomali | Indian name of the piece (if it is available) |
2-4 | The material or function of the object (not required; there is none in the example) | |
2-5 | de Goje | Name of the collector |
2-4 | 1904 | Year of the collection or entry into the collection |
2-x | (...) | All data in this description block pertains to additional or unrelated comments which are set in parentheses (it concerns additions of the editor which can be discussed, not those of the museum; in the example there are none) |
Around 2006 I began to photograph text documents - general catalog, record sheets, collection documents -. In the past I copied these, the subsequent disadvantage is that fact that my abbreviations and name standardizations contain possible errors that are not clear for a third party.
All text documents are always characterized by "- 0" (the number zero, not letter "O") in the file name, e.g. B-IV0345-0 (B: Berlin; IV0345: museum assigned number of the piece) thereby the texts always stand before the photos of the pieces.
There are different types characterized by text documents, by different letters after the zero and different colored marking.
Document type (de) | Translation (us) | Marking | Color |
---|---|---|---|
Document type (de) | Translation (us) | Marking | Color |
Generalkatalog | General catalog | -0[1] | yellow |
Kommentar | Commentaries | -0A | red |
Bildschirm (Foto) | Screen (Photograph) | -0B | green |
Karteikarte (Foto oder Scan) | Record Sheets (Photograph or Scan) | -0C | purple |
Sammlungsakte (Foto oder Scan) | Collection documents (Photograph or Scan) | -0I | blue |
[1] very rarely, there are texts introduced into a collection in the general catalog. In this scenario I have two to three pages for the same identification block (e.g. B-IV0345_bis_455). For these rare cases I have begun the numbers with -0a and/or -0b and/or -0c etc. |
I systematically photographed the general catalog - including collection listing or collection registry book - only in Berlin and Munich.
A detailed analysis of some pieces in the MfV Munich was started, referred to as commentary. The identification number of each piece was assigned to these text documents (* doc) and appears due to the assignment of "- 0A", behind the general catalog. In these text documents common comments and discussions can be written about the pieces in the future.
In some museums it was either not possible to photograph the pieces (Paris) or I could not find some pieces in the magazine. However, these were already digitally photographed and made available in the databank (Goeteborg, Leiden). These pieces were temporarily brought into the data system because I was able to photograph their screen from the data bank, not the actual piece.
In some museums I also photographed the record sheets or received these as Scan-ins from the museum (e.g. Basel); these that are currently available are marked by -0C.
So far, I have photographed the collections in Berlin, this begins at -0I and goes on as follows (roman numbering):
-0II
-0III
-0IIII
-0V
-0VI
-0VII
-0VIII
-0VIIII
-0X
-0XI etc.
To make it possible to search in all of the museums, it is necessary that there is a uniform word listing amongst them. There must be some sort of alignment of the different data and forms of writing and classification. This is particularly necessary with the designation of the ethnicities. In one list the different ways of writing of the ethnicities is listed and in each case a standardized way of writing the respective ethnicity is specified. This orients itself to a large extent with the English writing system of Timothy J. O'Leary, Ethnographic bibliography of South America, new Haven 1963. In addition, I adapted the writing system of those scientists who wrote the fundamental scientific monographs of the respective Ethnicities.
Since I originally took over museum data from many different museums, it is possible that the writing system is not standardized in every case. If you notice an inconsistency, communicate this to me please!
In addition, body parts are only designated if the pieces could be worn or carried on that body part. Decorative words such as bracelet, jewelry, cuff, crown, etc. were originally removed. This list is also a component of the thesaurus. Recently, it is possible to search for the different feather work categories again- e.g. hat or cuff -, in order to make a search for these different classifications possible.
At his point in my progress, I have made it possible to search ethnicity, body part, birds, collection and collection time period for all of the museums that I have worked at so far. This includes:
!!The search words are only in the singular!!
There are four different body region classifications:
For every body region there are numerous body parts that can wear jewelry.
